High Five for Friday!

Photobucket

It's Friday again! That means it's time to link up with Lauren at From My Grey Desk for High Five for Friday.

I missed last Friday because I was on vacation, but I think last Friday I would have done a "High 10 for Friday." It was a great week in Hilton Head with my family!

Here they are folks.

1. Check out this weather for the weekend. It's going to be hot, but I don't even care! NO RAIN. Zero. Zip. Ziltch. We got about 15 inches in our area last week from Tropical Storm Debby.

2. Owen and I took the dogs on a walk on this great trail near his parents house. My niece wanted to come along which was surprising because she's not the biggest fan of the dogs. By the end of the walk she was holding Tony's leash! I was so proud of her. We had a blast just walkin' and talkin'.

3. I got some beyond AWESOME new shoes at the Vince Camuto outlet while we were in Hilton Head. I've enjoyed wearing them this week... and admiring how beautiful they are and being proud of myself for the deal I got.

4. Owen's dad surprised us with new sod in our front yard while we were on vacation. A HUUUGE blessing. I still can't stop staring at how beautiful it looks.

5. And last but not least. Tony was on especially cute, but pouty and mischievous, behavior this week because he was trapped inside due to mass amounts of rainful!

Days of Grace

Last week I started reading "26 Ways in 26 Days to a Happier, Healthier Marriage" by The Dating Divas. In case you don't know about The Dating Divas, they have a pretty awesome website that's devoted to giving great date and gift ideas for married couples. It's all about encouraging closeness in marriage.

I was super excited when The Divas came out with this e-book because I knew it was going to be great, and it is. I read a short chapter a day. Each chapter is devoted to a new way to strengthen your marriage and really awakens you to what YOU need to work on.

To take a quote from The Diva's to sum up the book, it's about "Getting your mind set right about you and your role in the marriage." You've got to find the best in your life and in your marriage everyday for it to be successful... and that's all from THE FIRST CHAPTER!

The Diva's suggested finding 10 minutes a day to write down 5 things you are grateful for. I've decided that's completely do-able! What a better way to set your mind right about your life, your marriage or any relationship than constantly reminding yourself how much you have to be grateful for.

I AM SO BLESSED! But I've found myself moping around recently and taking it out on the person I love the most... my poor husband!

I hope you will accept the "Days of Grace" challenge to link up with me every Monday as I post  all of the things I wrote down for the week. Get a little glimpse inside me and my marriage!

The truth is, we all have countless things to be grateful for and reminding ourselves of that on a daily basis (no matter how bad the day might have been) will bring a smile to our face and a little joy to our heart!

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
Colossians 3:17

Summer Vacation

I'm back from vacation! I spent last week in Hilton Head, South Carolina with Owen and my parents. It was tons of fun, relaxing and the weather was perfect!!

However, we can home to yet ANOTHER tropical storm. This one's called Debby, and she is sure a downer. So far she's dumped over a foot of rain on J-ville in just a few days. I'm pretty sure I've never seen this much rain... ever!

But on to vacation.

Bascially we ate... spent time in the sun... shopped... boys golfed... girls went to spa... rode bikes... kayaked... ate... and shopped.

Our first night we ate dinner and walked around in an area called Harbour Town. The weather was great!

(no we didn't match on purpose)
Check out my new knot bracelet by Kiel James Patrick I got at Harbour Town. It goes with everything!
Dinner at the famous Salty Dog Cafe!
Gorgeous sunset
This is when we got home, but check out Troy and Tony in their Salty Dog bandannas. Those are some sharp looking pups.

Family bike ride! Mom may or may not have gotten majorly pooped on by a bird at some point during this ride...
We went kayaking on our last day. It was tons of fun!

For the grand finale... we hit up the outlet mall! I was super excited about the great deals I got at Vince Camuto and Loft. I think I scared Owen.

We also came back to an awesome surprise! Owen's dad sodded our entire front yard!! A HUGE blessing. It looks great, and is now getting watered. and watered. and watered. By TS Debby!

Dad's Day

Since I've entered adulthood, I enjoy Mother and Father's Day a lot more. Mostly because I have my own money and can actually afford to give back a little bit of everything that my parents have given me throughout my life.

Me and pops.
This year for Father's Day my dad wanted me to go to to church with him and my mom and then for us all to go to lunch in St. Augustine.

St. Augustine is a historical city, the oldest city in North America, that's located about 40 minutes from where we live. There's tons of stuff to do there, great shops, restaurants, tours and a beach nearby. You can walk the whole city. We love going as a family, and Owen and I love it to. Unfortunately Owen had to work so he didn't get to partake in the family fun.

We ate lunch at an Irish restaurant on the bay, walked around in the shops and enjoyed the beautiful weather. All-in-all it was a great day!

I am always so grateful to have my family close by so we can spend fun days like this together.

How did you celebrate your dad this year?

** I'm off on vacation to Hilton Head for a couple days... See ya!!

Sweet Pete's Candy

Yesterday my best friend (since 3) Amber and I went to a new candy shop in town I'd been hearing about. It's called Sweet Pete's, and it's pretty darn cool. We took her 4-year-old little girl Ryleigh with us, because let's face it two adults need an excuse to drive 30 minutes across town to go to a candy store... Right?

This place was awesome.

If I was 4-year-old Jenna, I would have felt like I was in a scene from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory... That was around the time it was in my rotation of favorite movies to rent from the video store... It was decorated with flowers and butterflies and bright colors. There's was candy everywhere!!!

(Fantasy.....)
(Reality... still pretty cool, but there were no Oompa Loopmas, I checked.)
As soon as we walked in the man behind the counter, who I presume was "Sweet Pete", offered us some fresh sea salt caramel and it... Was... Amazing. The perfect combination of sweet and salty.

It was a great day and great experience! Ryleigh was probably slightly less amused than we were She walked in so adult-like, made her candy selection and was ready to blow that joint and chow down in the car.

I encourage you to explore new places in your town! Support local businesses! Read local magazines and newspapers to find out what's going on and what's new. That's how I learned about Sweet Pete's. Check out my Visit South Guide to Jacksonville post on Sweet Pete's here for more details!

Blackberry Pie... Oh My

Tuesday night I had the exciting honor and privilege of my good friend and college roommate Kristina stopping by for a mid-week, one night sleepover! When I found out she was coming a couple of weeks ago, I immediately decided to jumped at the opportunity to use this time to steal some of her baking knowledge while spending time with my sweet friend.

You see, Kristina is a baking goddess.

She can bake anything. Pretty much perfectly, in my opinion. As my college roommate, she's seen me through some of the darkest and most depressing days of my baking career (and probably rolled her eyes a lot as I ate pepperoni and mozzarella cheese on bread from the toaster oven repeatedly for dinner...) She's the person that I call to this day if I'm in the middle of a recipe, realize I have no eggs and need to know what I can concoct as a substitute.

She always knows the genius stuff like that. That's why I was so excited to learn how to make blackberry pie from Kristina herself!

Why blackberry pie you ask? Because although I live in a highly populated neighborhood, there is an abundance of blackberry bushes in the woods behind my house. I had no problem finding the amount of berries needed to complete the recipe!

I was probably just as excited about picking the blackberries as I was about eating baking the pie. Some of my fondest memories growing up involve picking blackberries at my grandma's house. Always in the hot Summer sun and always just because there was nothing better to do. Owen (and probably the majority of my neighbors) got a pretty big kick out of my picking too. Mostly because I was wearing rainboots and dish gloves... Those thorns are pretty dangerous. Don't hate.

*******

So on to the baking! I'm not going try to walk you through this. I'm not a baker. I will say that baking pie crust wasn't as daunting as I always thought it was so I'll probably do it again. Kristina also said that this recipe would work for any type of berry.

CRUST
1 cup flour
½ tsp salt
1/3 cup shortening
4-5 tbsp cold water
1 tbsp granulated sugar
½ tsp ground cinnamon

Stir flour & salt together.  Blend in shortening with fork or better yet use a pastry cutter, slowly add water to make dough stick together. Roll out on flour big enough for pie pan .Kind of roll the dough around the rolling pin and roll onto pan. Press dough to fit pan and flute edges.

*NOTE: For a larger pie (i.e. big enough to hold all of the filling below), I make 1.5 times the crust recipe.

FILLING
1 qt blueberries
4 tbsp flour
½ to ¾ cup sugar (if the berries are not too sweet use the 3/4c of sugar)
pinch of salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 pint heavy cream
Wash and drain berries. Pour into large pie shell. Mix rest of ingredients (it will be a little lumpy that is ok) and pour over berries.

Put flour on a clean part of the counter to start the rolling.
Roll the dough until it's a little bit bigger than the size of your pie pan.
Once the dough is in the pan, roll the excess dough under and "pinch and poke" to form the crust.
Make sure your berries of choice are clean!
Pour the mixture into the crust.

Bake 375 for 1 hour or until top is brown and bubbly.

Delicious! Enjoy :)

High 5 For Friday!

It's Friday! Yay! Time to link up with Lauren at From My Grey Desk.

I feel pretty gross today. But I'm on vacation all week next week so that's cause to celebrate... and high five.

1. We had out first cookout of the Summer last Friday, and our first fire pit fire. It was awesome. Mostly because there were s'mores involved.

Stud with tongs.
2. I went with Owen golfing this week. I really enjoyed being outside with him and watching him do his thing. He liked bossing me around and making me move the flag and carry his putter.

3. My friend Britney and I invented and executed something called "Pinner Dinner." Bascially we found and made delicious recipes off Pinterest. It was super fun and the recipes we picked we're yummy, easy and cheap! We made peach, basil and brie French bread pizzas and sopapilla cheesecake.

Delicious. gooey. goodness. (not healthy at all)
4. I'll be posting on this soon, but my mom and I made some great finds at one of our favorite local antique stores. Such as this awesome little cart and those bottles that now live in my kitchen.

5. Tony was very cute this week. And so was Troy. I had to include him this week because he decided to jump on the couch with our company, which was pretty hilarious.

Have a great weekend!

Fourth of July in Jacksonville

Fourth of July is coming quick!

What are you going to do?

This year, I am determined to do something beyond amazing because it's the first year in about 3 or 4 years that my husband and I actually get to spend it together! For the past couple years he's been working, and then into our dating years there were times when one of us was out of town.

It's time to blow the roof off.

Our town, Jacksonville, Florida, puts on a great fireworks display. I am hoping we can take the boat out on the St. Johns River during the day with friends and then enjoy the Fireworks Spectacular downtown that night.

If you live near the Jacksonville area, or are planning on being here for the Fourth of July, you should check out the fireworks downtown! They are awesome! I am completely fascinated by...and terrified of...fireworks.

Check out the details in the travel blog I write for every week about cool things to do in Jacksonville, Visit South's Guide to Jacksonville! (shameless plug...)

Lip Gloss Koozie

Check out this cool new thing I discovered! I like to call it a Lip Gloss Koozie. I'm not sure of the official name.

A couple years ago Bath and Body Works came out with the mini anti-bacterials with the "koozies" that can attach to your bag handle or key chain. Well now they have them for lip gloss, and they are awesome!

I was super excited to see it in the store. There's no way I could resist the purchase. Mine is white with silver sparkles and silver bedazzles. They also had a black one. I anticipate more designs and colors will be released soon.

This is also my first time trying their CO Bigelow lip gloss, which I ended up really liking! They have a ton of flavors. I chose the vanilla mint.

Thanks Bath and Body Works for making my lip moisturization super convenient.

Eyebrow Threading...

Last week two of my girlfriends and I went to get our eyebrows threaded for the first time. I was pretty wary at first, but my friend Ashley talked me into it. (Normally I'm the one talking her into doing insane things so I decided I should probably be a trooper.)

Eyebrow threading is an alternative to waxing or tweezing. Basically the beautician, very skillfully and very quickly, wraps a thin floss-like thread around the hairs and yanks them out. Some people thread all of their facial hairs. The lady who did the treatment told us threading increases blood flow to your face and produces the same affects as a massage. (I wouldn't go that far, but my eyebrows didn't feel miserable afterwards.)

The sound of the hairs coming out is pretty weird, but other than that, it's not bad at all as far as pain. On a pain scale from 1-10 compared to waxing, I would say waxing is a 7 and threading is a 4.

Overall we were all very pleased with the results. It was a lot cleaner than waxing and a lot quicker than tweezing. My friend Ashley is allergic to wax, so it was great alternative for her. Plus it was only $10. The place we went to was in our local mall.

Thanks to my friend Ashley for allowing me to take pictures of her for before, during and after the threading experience!
Before

During

After
Sorry the after picture is so yellow! The lighting wasn't great. Ashley's eyebrows weren't that bad to start with, but the threading left your eyelid completely smooth and there was no sticky wax left behind. It's definitely worth a try!

Meet Knightro

Since I was a mascot in college (yes it's true), I was volunteered (or kinda of enthusiastically volunteered myself) to supervise the mascot at the school I work at. This is his first year in commission, and his name is Knightro.

Towards the end of the school year, I could feel the enthusiasm for Knightro waning among the student body, so I worked with our school drama class, and we filmed "Knightro's Top 10 Things to Do This Summer."

I wanted to share the video with numbers 3, 2 and 1 of the countdown in it with you because it's my favorite of them all! I love Knightro's interaction with random people. The students came up with all the ideas and filmed it all. I am so happy with the final results. I had to share :)

HIGH FIVE! It's Friday.

Every Friday I link up with Lauren at From My Grey Desk to high five because it's Friday.

So... find the nearest person...

Raise a hand high...

And give a great big HIGH FIVE!

Why? BECAUSE IT'S FRIDAY!!

and officially Summer vacation at the school I work at! Woooop.

My High Five

1. Like I said, today is the last day of school! I still have to work throughout the Summer, but I get to wear pants to work (normally it's just skirts), I get 30 extra minutes of sleep time, I get off an hour earlier and I have some pretty awesome trips planned. Those are some things to celebrate!

I work with some pretty awesome ladies who happen to be some of my best friends!
2. Friday night I got to see one of my long-time friends, Brian! We celebrated his birthday at cool Irish pub/restaurant downtown. Brian's birthdays are always pretty epic and dredge up stories that are long forgotten. It was "good times" as Brian would say!

3. Owen built a fire pit in our backyard a couple months ago and since then I have been on the lookout for perfect benches. I found some this week at TJ Maxx. It was pretty exciting! They were $19.99 each. Now I am determined to have a fire in the fire pit this weekend!

Troy insisted he be in the picture.
4. I finally made time to relax by the pool! It was so nice. Our neighborhood has an adult pool that is always super quiet and never crowded. It's the best!

5. Tony. well. he was cute. As always. Owen and I caught him sleeping like this on the couch while we were watching t.v. after what apparently was way past his bedtime.

Pic Collage App

Recently, by accident, I discovered the Pic Collage App for iPad and iPhone. I was trying to download another picture collage app my friend showed me, forgot the name and ended up with Pic Collage.

It turned out to be a pretty great mistake because Pic Collage is awesome! I downloaded it this past weekend but just started messing around with it last night.

It's basically an app that allows you to make picture collages using pictures on your iPad/iPhone, Facebook or from the web. There are awesome features that allow you to change the background pattern/color, add text, edit photo effect, clip and resize photos, apply boarders and add stickers. It's SUPER user friendly.

And guess what else it allows you to do! SEND POSTCARDS of your collage... straight from your device. So cool. You don't have do anything, just pay like a $1. You can also save the collage to your photo stream, Facebook, Twitter or e-mail it to a friend.

You should try it. It's tons of fun! My life is changed forever.

Here's the first two I made!
